Above is Croyde in January and below Saunton in November.

These three pictures are just a selection of the beaches on the North Devon Coast . Above is Woolacombe about 3 miles of golden sand with plenty of parking and just a short walk from the shops, cafés, pubs etc. Lifeguards are on most of the beaches in the summer season.

Exmoor , home to wild deer, Exmoor ponies and a variety of birds. There are ranger guided walks or a 4x4 safari for the less fleet of foot. An ideal area for horse riding, cycling or ambling and enjoying the scenery. For the more literary why not explore R D Blackmore's Lorna Doone country.

RHS gardens at Rosemoor (left) is a great place to get ideas for your own plot, Broomhill sculpture gardens features some outrageous pieces, National Trust at Knightshayes and Arlington, with its carriage driving. The Eden Project is about 2 hours away and while in Cornwall why not pop into the Lost Gardens of Heligan just a few miles away.

The Big Sheep and the Milky Way both offer great days out and have indoor play areas for the children, you can go way back in time at the Dinosaur Park or visit Exmoor Zoo and see the various exotic animal species that are part of its conservation programme

Lynton and Lynmouth, remembered for the floods of 1952, have a scenic cliff railway. You can take boat trips from the pretty harbour, or go fishing. A short drive takes you to the Valley of the Rocks, with its dramatic scenery and wild goats.

Further on down the coast is Ilfracombe with regular ferry crossings from its quay to Lundy Island (wildlife haven just 3 ½ miles long and ½ mile wide).

Hartland Point, Hartland Quay and Hartland Abbey (where filming has recently taken place for a Rosamunde Pilcher book adaptation) also offer dramatic views.

Further down the coast is the well-known, traffic free, fishing village of Clovelly with its 400ft drop to the beach.

An hour away is Bude with its canal and beaches.

North Devon has possibly the finest links course never to have held The Open. The oldest course in England is at Westward Ho. There are nine 18 hole golf courses within 30 minutes drive of the barns.
